Lawns Where Tobacco Used to Grow
Hydroseeding in Oak Ridge often happens on ground that grew tobacco a generation ago. Until the late 1990s the area was mostly rural farmland with numerous tobacco farms. Since the town incorporated in 1998, many of those farms have been sold to developers and turned into upscale housing developments, and shopping centers have gone up along the NC 68 corridor near Oak Ridge Road.
What row crops leave behind
Years of tilling can leave thin topsoil, a compacted layer a few inches down and old furrows across a field. A new lawn on that ground needs the hard layer broken up and the low spots evened out. When we find thin or mixed fill on a lot, we include topsoil in the plan so the grass roots into soil instead of bare subsoil.
Big houses, big yards
The newer neighborhoods tend to have wide front lawns, side slopes down to drainage swales and long sightlines where a patchy result shows. We hydroseed the whole yard in one visit when we can, so it grows in evenly, and we keep the mulch layer consistent across slopes and flats.
Commercial pads on NC 68
Retail and office pads along NC 68 need stabilization as soon as grading stops. We do construction site hydroseeding, slope stabilization on pad edges, and silt fence or inlet protection around storm drains while the site is open.
Still mostly rural
Even with the growth, the 2020 census counted 95.7 percent of Oak Ridge residents as living in rural areas, and the community hosted a popular Easter horse show from 1945 to 2013. Paddocks, field edges and riding areas can take a tougher pasture mix rather than a lawn blend. The Haw River passes north of town.

Oak Ridge Questions
Is old tobacco ground good for a lawn?
It can be, once it is loosened and leveled. Row-crop ground often has a compacted layer below the surface that we break up before seeding.
Can you seed a horse pasture or paddock?
Yes. We can spray a pasture mix instead of a lawn blend. Animals need to stay off new seed until it is well rooted.
Do you stabilize commercial pads along NC 68?
Yes, with hydroseed and mulch on flats and blankets or bonded fiber matrix on steeper pad edges.
How soon can kids and pets use a freshly hydroseeded Oak Ridge yard?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after the first few mowings. Heavy use should wait until the lawn has filled in.
