Seeding Where the Foothills Begin

Hydroseeding in King deals with ground that is starting to climb. King calls itself the Gateway to the Foothills. It sits in southern Stokes County with part of the city in Forsyth County, about 15 miles northwest of Winston-Salem. Pilot Mountain State Park is 8 miles to the northwest and Hanging Rock State Park is 16 miles to the north, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are about a 40-minute drive away.

Steeper yards, faster water

A yard with real slope moves rainwater quickly, and on bare soil that water carries seed and topsoil with it. On King lots we often spray a heavier hydromulch with tackifier and blanket the steepest faces. On long slopes we can break up the run with a shallow swale so water does not build speed.

Driveways on hills

Many homes sit above or below the road on sloping drives. The cut and fill banks along those drives are a frequent washout spot. Shaping the bank to a sensible angle and covering it with a seeded straw blanket usually solves it.

Along I-74 and US 52

Interstate 74 runs south and west of the city center together with US 52, with access from Exit 123. New commercial pads and subdivisions near the highway need silt fence and fast stabilization while they are graded.

Lawn or low-mow slopes

Not every hillside needs to be lawn. On slopes too steep to mow safely, we can seed a lower-maintenance cover that holds soil without weekly mowing.

King Questions

How steep is too steep for hydroseed and mulch alone?

As a rough guide, once a slope is steeper than about 3 to 1 we add a blanket or bonded fiber matrix over the seed.

Can you seed a slope I cannot mow?

Yes. A low-maintenance cover mix holds soil on steep ground without needing regular mowing.

Do you install silt fence on hillside lots?

Yes. On a sloped lot we install it along the downhill side before grading starts.

What is a tackifier?

It is a binder mixed into the hydroseed slurry that glues mulch and seed to the soil surface so rain does not move it as easily.
