Renewing Lawns in an Older Town
Hydroseeding in Jamestown is as much about renewing tired lawns as starting new ones. Quaker families came here from Pennsylvania in the 18th century looking for productive farmland, and during the 1960s several residential neighborhoods sprang up from that old farmland. Many of those yards are now more than fifty years old, with thin turf, shade from mature trees and worn-out soil.
Renovating a sixty-year-old yard
When a lawn has thinned to bare patches and weeds, overseeding alone often is not enough. We can kill or strip the old turf, loosen the soil, fix low spots and hydroseed the whole yard. Where trees have grown up over the decades, we use a shade-tolerant blend under the canopy and a sun mix in the open.
The Deep River and the City Lake
The Deep River, a tributary of the Cape Fear, flows through the southern part of town. High Point City Lake sits where the Mendenhall family's original farmhouse and land once were; the Mendenhalls ran the area's first grist and lumber mills. Yards that drain toward the river or the lake should not sit bare after grading, so we stabilize them quickly and keep silt fence on the low side until grass has rooted.
Built around storm sewers
In the 1960s the town funded a sanitary sewer system, storm sewers and paved residential streets. Street inlets in these neighborhoods catch whatever washes off a bare yard, so on renovation jobs near an inlet we add inlet protection while the soil is exposed.
Small town, close lots
Jamestown covers just 2.9 square miles, all land, and lots are closer together than in the rural parts of Guilford County. Equipment access is often through a narrow side yard. A hydroseeding hose can reach a back yard from the street without tracking machines across the lawn.

Jamestown Questions
Should I overseed or start over on my old Jamestown lawn?
When weeds or bare dirt cover over roughly half the yard, starting over with a full renovation usually beats overseeding.
What grass works under big shade trees?
A shade-tolerant fescue blend does best. Even then, deep shade limits any grass, so raising a few low limbs helps.
Can you reach my back yard without driving across the lawn?
Usually yes. Hydroseed is sprayed through a hose, so the truck can stay on the street or driveway.
Do you protect storm drains during lawn work?
Yes. Where a bare yard drains toward a street inlet, we add inlet protection until the new grass holds the soil.
